I live in Columbus, Ohio on a .28-acre plot. I have a corner lot and it is mostly flat but I do have a slight slope at the East side of my yard. My front yard is larger than my back yard; therefore, I planted a vegetable and rain garden in my front yard.

At one time, seed saving was a necessity. Gardeners and farmers carefully selected and stored the best seeds from their harvests, ensuring they had seed for planting in subsequent years. The knowledge of pollination, purity, harvesting and storage of seeds was all part of survival and learned within the family and community.
Greg talks to community homesteader Melinda who founded a community group to share tips and experiences while learning about homesteading. Melinda was a bit of a groundbreaker in her town with her unorthodox thinking, so in order to find others with similar preparedness and vintage skills interests she created an online group.

My farm is technically suburban I guess, since I am just walking distance from town. We call it Erlengrabenli. My husband’s family has had a farm for many generations in Switzerland named Erlengraben (Willow ditch).
