Fruit Tree Tour Teaches Kids about Sustainable Food
Thanks to an organization called Common Vision, children all over California are learning about the environment by planting fruit tree orchards at their schools. Traveling the state in a vegetable oil-powered bus, the 20 volunteers make stops at schools around the state to provide a fun and interactive day of learning and tree-planting for children who often have little to no access to healthy foods. The volunteers tell the children an engaging story through a performance using music, puppets, and fun interactive characters that teach them about the environment. By the end of the skit, the children realize that they can make a difference for the environment and their community in their own schoolyard! Then, everybody works together to plant up to 30 fruit trees at their school and paint fun and colorful signs for the orchard. To ensure that the orchard is a success, Common Vision implements a drip irrigation system and trains teachers and parents to care for the orchard.
