82: Jason Mraz Part 1:
Urban Farming Adventures
The farming passion of a two-time Grammy Award winner.
Jason Mraz is a well-known, two-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter. But what many don’t know about Jason is that he’s also an urban farming enthusiast with a passion for gardening. Jason has been backyard homesteading for the past 5 years and currently owns and operates a 10-acre subtropical fruit orchard where he grows avocado, coffee and 25 other fruit varieties. He believes a connection to farmers and/or the origin of food itself can empower a person to live a happier, healthier, eco-friendlier and more economical life.
This is part 1 of a two-part series on Jason Mraz’s food-growing journey.
Some highlights from this episode:
When Jason first started gardening, his version of composting was chucking his pizza scraps directly into the garden! He’s sure come a long way since then.
When he first got started, he invited 80 neighbors over to share ideas and resources.
Jason grows 27 different types of fruits, and multiple varieties within that.
“I learned patience through gardening…because it’s such a sweet reward when those fruits do come.”
Ketchup changed his life! (Find out why at 21:25)
His advice for new farmers? “Just start… There is SO much material out there to get started…Don’t be scared, just get dirty!”
Jason loves to drink herbal infusions…listen at 32:00 to find out how he makes them.
