Farming on the Rise

Farming seems to be having a comeback here in the U.S.—the 2012 Census of Agriculture, which was just released this month, is showing that farming is regaining its popularity. It found that, in 2012, 1 in 5 farmers were “beginning” farmers, meaning they had operated a farm for under 10 years. A related finding is that more and more young people (an increase of 11.3% from 2007-2012) are consider farming to be their primary job. Local and organic food is increasing both in production and consumption—data shows that almost 150,000 farmers are selling straight to consumers and 50,000 to local retailers, with 2011 local food sales reaching $7 billion. The market for organic food has grown even more dramatically, with sales of organic products increasing by 82% from 2007 to 2012. Do you think a shift in consciousness is at play here?
