Did You Know…?
Over 200 million urban farms exist around the world and they supply food to one-quarter of the world’s urban population.
Did you know that there are over 200 million urban and suburban farms worldwide? According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, these 200 million urban farms supply food to 700 million people, which is one quarter of the world’s urban population (as of 2005). It’s pretty amazing when you think about the fact that most of these farms are as small as a rooftop or a backyard. It’s no wonder that urban farming is catching on—it truly benefits all who participate, whether as farmers or customers of the farmers, by producing healthy and fresh food, supporting the local economy, nurturing the environment, and enabling community interaction.
