35: Danielle and Jordan Nuhfer on Raised Garden Beds
“Grow Your Own Freedom” is a sustainable living business that provides raised bed garden beds
They grow what they can, know what they buy, go back to the basics and discover nature’s goodness.
Their goal is to pass on what they learn.
The “Grow Your Own Freedom” business idea truly came full circle when they decided that they wanted to find a way to reach out to their community so that they could show others what is possible in an urban backyard. In the spring of 2013, they started a community garden in a small strip of land in our back alley where neighbors could pick fresh vegetables.
What they thought was going to be a simple vegetable garden turned into a space where neighbors shared their bounties and a place where they were able to connect with people who lived in the neighborhood and may never have met.
They have about 16 garden beds – putting in a mini fruit orchard. and a hoop house.
They are building an educational space for people to see what is possible in the yard.
They took some permaculture courses: 1 each! They wanted to start a business where they pass that on to other people.
Permaculture opened up eyes to what’s possible.
Jordan did front yard; Danielle worked on back yard.
They gained a deeper understanding of how their yard worked as a system.
They attended their course at the Eastern PA permaculture guild and did the weekend classes,
June through September, which gave them time to absorb information and sit with the paradigm change that permaculture is.
Working with Danielle and Jordan:
April, May, June is garden bed season. They do an onsite consultation and survey wants and needs, how many in the family, where are they going to put this.
They educate about the sun, and the source of quality compost. They also plant the plants and make the plans to maintain the garden.
Their business also includes body products and essential oil blends that Jordan’s chemistry background enhances.
