For most of human history, saving seeds was a natural part of gardening and farming—families passed down seeds like heirlooms, preserving plants that thrived in their local soil and climate. But in the last century, that tradition was gradually replaced. Instead of saving your own seeds, you were encouraged to buy new ones each year. Over time many people forgot how to save seeds at all. Relearning seed saving means reconnecting with a practice that once gave gardeners more control, resilience, and diversity in what they grow. Bill McDorman and Greg Peterson will unpack the circumstances that led to the elimination of seed saving and how we can return to this burgeoning new ancient ritual.
