Urban Farm’s Tour Series

Our valley is home to many EPIC farms & gardens!
Come join us as we tour of some of our favorite Urban Farms in and around Phoenix.

FALL UPDATE: There was not enough of Farmer Greg to go around this fall, as we truly have so many epic things happening, so we are going to resume the Tour Series in Spring 2019.

With so many different gardeners, there are many ways to bring beautiful and productive gardens to the desert. We know that you can get some inspiration from these beautiful food forests and bountiful garden beds.  The important part is to allow yourself to be inspired by the layouts, methods, creativity, and different results at the different locations.  Keep in mind that each farm will have different things to teach you at the different times of the year.  And as your skills and gardening changes, you can find something new with each farm as the seasons change.

Take notes, take pictures, & take heart… YOU can create your own urban farm too!

Here is a list of this past spring’s tours:

The Urban Farm
of Farmer Greg

This is the environmental showcase farm in the heart of Phoenix that Farmer Greg designed so that you can experience first-hand some of the many things that you can do to live a more environmentally-friendly life.

There is much to be inspired from here and learn about with each visit.

Arizona
Worm Farms

This is a functioning farm and sustainability experiment just north of South Mountain with chickens, vegetables, and lots and lots of worms!

They sell mulch and compost that is perfect for Arizona gardens, as well as offer worm bins classes.

St. Vincent de Paul’s Urban Farm

This urban farm includes nearly one acre of farmland with a variety of fruits and vegetables, an aquaponics system that produces tilapia and a robust composting program that turns kitchen scraps into valuable soil to grow more food.

Using permaculture and natural farming methods, they’ve eliminated the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Longevity
Gardens

This abundant food forest in Tempe is a premier example of turning a typical desert yard into a true oasis, starting with lots of wood chips!

This once bare desert dirt yard is now an unbelievable desert oasis with 250+ trees, a zen garden for a turtle, rainwater harvesting, and a yoga work out area.  See how they make their own compost, raise their chickens, and do most of the grocery shopping from the raised bed gardens.

Adding tours to the series: We are always looking for awesome and EPIC urban farms and gardens to help inspire others to start, expand, or improve their own urban farms and gardens.  We try to have a few tours in the spring and in the fall of each year.  If you have a property that you are willing to open for tours, or know of one that would be great to add to our list, please send us an email at tours@urbanfarm.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our Urban Farm’s Tour Series are outdoor events as we tour these yards, and while the weather is great for our plants this time of year it can be a bit warm for our persons. Please bring water, wear or carry sun protection, and wear comfortable shoes. Also, some of these tours are of are private residences and they are kindly opening their yards for large groups of us, so there are no restroom facilities.

In addition, reasonable steps have been taken to make each tour location safe for attendees. By participating in any event in our Tour Series, each attendee agrees to accept full responsibility for any injuries or illness that may be sustained in the course of the tour activities and events, and agrees to release, indemnify, and hold harmless each property owner from and against any present or future claim, loss, or liability for injury to person or property arising from their participation.
